Double Bind and Functional Freeze. What about getting the best from project teams instead when leading projects? That’s as big as it gets.
No matter which project methodology or framework we use, it’s people who make projects succeed, and even more so when augmented by AI. We want them to be productive.
The double bind is no mere technical dilemma; it is a psychic snare. It arises when person is addressed by contradictory imperatives, each demanding obedience, yet each negating the other. One is caught between opposites, unable to move without betrayal.
Consider:
– Be spontaneous! commands the mother.
Yet spontaneity, by its very nature, cannot be commanded. The child, compelled to dance before strangers, finds his creativity extinguished by the very demand for its presence.
– Love me, but only if you do so freely.
Here, love is demanded under the guise of freedom, and the partner’s heart is trapped in a paradox: to comply is to betray the condition, to resist is to betray the bond.
The functional freeze is the twin of the double bind. Outwardly, the individual appears productive, moving through tasks with mechanical precision. Inwardly, however, the vital currents of creativity are numbed. The person is present in form but absent in essence.
Let’s look into performance-driven environments. If we agree that today’s productivity cannot be detached from creativity or passion, creative ones are going to outcompete in productivity.
What happens when we communicate the strategic importance of productivity using the following framing:
– Be more productive if you are committed, otherwise, consider moving on.
The words seem rational, even compelling. Yet beneath their surface lies the double bind. For the individual cannot confess weakness without appearing disloyal, nor ask for help without seeming unproductive.
Thus she strives, but her striving leads not to flowering, but to paralysis. Creativity is blocked, passion is doubted, and the freeze descends.
When we impose the double bind for short‑term gain, we sacrifice creativity, which cannot be commanded. The apparent solution becomes the seed of long‑term decline. Simple formulas cannot endure the complexity and collapse under the weight of paradox.
What is required is not command but invitation, creation of space. The team must be addressed in a way that honors both commitment and vulnerability, that allows to contribute its riches without fear of betrayal.
Commitment is not measured by output alone, but by the courage to bring forth your authentic contribution, even when it asks for support.
